What Are HID Lights and Why Would I Want Them?
HID stands for High Intensity Discharge. This design produces more light and they last longer than any standard halogen lighting. This new lighting system consists of a set of 2 bulbs, 2 ballasts and 2 starters. Even though they put out more power and light, they use less power from the vehicle than halogen bulbs. So how do they work?
First the starter takes the signal from the vehicle and promptly sends it to the ballast. The ballast then increases that signal to a high current signal that is sent to the bulb. The plug in HID bulb receives the signal and creates the light. Then the bulb is filled with a mixture of gases and salts. When the bulb receives that amplified power from the ballast, the gases are energized inside the bulb which creates a white/blue light output.
Now why would you want these HID lights? For the every day driver, you should know that over half of the accidents at night are caused from bad lighting conditions. The HID lights are brighter which will not only improve your night vision but driving on bad road conditions, such as in the rain too. The light they produce is thrown out further in front of you and wider too which allows you to see lines in the road as well as debris, animals or even people on the side.
The HID lights also will last up to 10 times longer than conventional halogen bulbs. Where halogen bulbs were built with a filament, which broke easy from road bumps and shocks to the vehicle, HID lights are sturdier and not damaged as easy. While they may cost more to have installed, the savings will come in not having to replace them as much.
HID lights are a popular trend among car enthusiast because this light not only offers exceptional night driving illumination but they come a wide range of colors too. These lights are measured by units called Kelvin (K) and range from 3,000K – 10,000K color ranges. The higher the K, the bluer the light output will be.
With the wide selection of color options, show cars are seen with not only the headlights in HID, but the interior lights and even under-glow lighting too. So not only is the functionality of better driving vision a plus, but the visual appeal they offer is exciting at car shows. They add class to your car, as well as give you a more confidence behind the wheel while driving in less than perfect conditions.
When HID light first hit the road, it was only on certain high end models. Then authorized car dealerships could install them on some vehicles as aftermarket upgrades.
